Relationship to Federal Regulations - Alabama

Alabama motor carrier regulations require motor carriers engaged in the transportation of explosives, hazardous materials, or hazardous wastes, as defined by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), to comply with applicable federal transportation regulations governing the carriage of explosives and hazardous materials by public highway.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has adopted by reference 49 CFR Part 107, Subpart B; Part 40; Parts 171-180; Parts 382-384; and Parts 390-399 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Hazardous Materials Regulations, including future amendments. These regulations apply to motor carriers engaged in both interstate and intrastate commerce.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), through its Motor Carrier Safety Unit, exercises regulatory control over the transportation of hazardous materials within the state.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is the lead agency in developing and administering the Hazardous Waste Program within Alabama.
