Summary of differences between federal and state regulations

Virginia law prohibits employers from intentionally communicating an individual’s Social Security Number (SSN) to the general public. Employers may not require the use of employees’ SSNs for access to the internet unless a password, unique PIN, or other authentication device is also required. Employers may not send materials on which an SSN is visible.
