Summary of differences between federal and state regulations
Employers in Texas may not make available to the general public an employee’s Social Security Number (SSN). Employers may not display employees’ SSN, nor require employees to transmit their SSN over the internet unless the connection is secure or encrypted. Employers may not print employees’ SSN on materials. Employers must also keep the following information confidential and unavailable to the general public: an employee’s driver’s license number or government-issued identification number, and an account number or credit or debit card number in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account confidential.
