Front overhang / Utility poles
Generally, no vehicle may carry any load extending more than 3 feet beyond the front of such vehicle. However, any utility pole carried by a self-propelled pole carrier may extend beyond the front overhang limit set by Va. Code Ann. § 46.2-1120, if the pole:
- Is no more than 55 feet in length;
- Cannot be dismembered;
- Does not extend more than 10 feet beyond the front bumper of the vehicle: and
- If between sunrise and sunset: (1) the front of the pole is marked by a flag of the type required under § 46.2-1121 on the rear of certain loads; or (2) operation of the vehicle is required to make emergency repairs to utility service, and the front of the pole is marked by a light of the type required under § 46.2-1121 on the rear of certain loads.

No vehicle which is designed or used for the purpose of hauling logs, poles, lumber, barrels, hogsheads, or other materials or containers which by their nature may shift or roll, may be operated unless its load is securely fastened to prevent the load from shifting or falling from the vehicles, by adequate:
- Log chains,
- Metal cables,
- Nylon webbing,
- Steel straps, or
- Other restraining devices.
