California’s requirements for personal protective equipment correspond to the federal requirements; however, the state may have rewritten them in part or in whole. California also adds further requirements. Click on the following links to view the state and federal regulations.

A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- Hand protection cannot be worn when it can cause an entanglement hazard (3384).
- Employees should not wear jewelry around moving parts of machinery (3384).
- If they isolate hazard exposure, screens or shields may be adequate for nearby employees (3382).
- Contact lenses cannot be worn in harmful environments except in special cases and if certain criteria are met (3382).
- Criteria are established for selecting laser safety glass (3382).
- There are regulations for body protection such as not allowing loose clothing around entanglement hazards, removing clothing saturated with hazardous substances, and providing body protection from flying objects or substances (3383).
- Foot protection is required to protect from hot, corrosive, or poisonous substances, as well as abnormally wet locations (3385).
- Protective footwear purchased after January 26, 2007 must meet the requirements and specifications in American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F 2412-05, Standard Test Methods for Foot Protection and ASTM F 2413-05, Standard Specification for Performance Requirements for Foot Protection (3385).
- Protective footwear purchased on or before January 26, 2007 shall meet the requirements of either the American National Standard for Personal Protection —Protective Footwear, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z41-1999, or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F2412-05, Standard Test Methods for Foot Protection and ASTM F 2413-05, Standard Specification for Performance Requirements for Foot Protection which are hereby incorporated by reference (3385).
- Protectors are not to be interchanged between employees before being properly cleaned (3387).
- Protectors need to be capable of being cleaned and disinfected (3387).
