Application
At least once per year, the following covered vehicles must undergo a compulsory inspection at an accredited inspection station by a certified mechanic. Stickers will be issued to those vehicles when free of defects.
Vehicles covered
The following road vehicles must undergo an inspection annually:
- Emergency vehicles;
- Vehicles having a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 kilograms or more, except motor homes, house trailers, tool vehicles and farm trailers, farm machines, as well as construction trailers and farm trailers;
- Tow trucks having gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4,500 kilograms; and
- Vehicles assigned to passenger transportation for baptisms, weddings, and funerals under the Act respecting transportation services by taxi.
The following road vehicles must undergo mechanical inspection semiannually:
- Vehicles used for driving instruction by a driving school, excluding motorcycles and mopeds; and
- Taxis, buses, and minibuses, vehicles engaged in the transportation of school children.
A listing of facilities which have been certified to conduct these inspections may be obtained by calling (418) 873-7620 (in Montreal), (418) 643-7620 (in Québec City) or (800) 361-7620 (from elsewhere in the province, Canada, and United States). This information is also available through SAAQ at www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca.
Québec recognizes decals and inspection reports that have been issued in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian provincial regulations or the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR 396.17 through 396.23), for trucks, buses and minibuses.
Proof of inspection (either the decal, inspection report or a copy of the report) will have to be on the vehicle and available to enforcement personnel if requested. The documentation required will be the same as that specified in 49 CFR 396.17(c)(1) and (2).
