Application
All commercial vehicles, where the actual or registered weight exceeds 4,500 kilograms, in use on the highway and registered in the province are required to undergo periodic inspections at least once every 12 months (buses every six months) immediately following repair for damage which made the vehicle incapable of meeting the minimum standards set out in the Official Inspection Station Manual and in the name of the registered owner or vendor immediately before being sold (unless previously inspected according to the applicable requirements).
All out-of-province commercial vehicles are required to display a valid vehicle inspection approval sticker issued by a recognized jurisdiction.
Procedure
Inspections, which must be conducted by a certified tester at an official inspection station, will include, but is not limited to, a visual inspection and mechanical examination of the following vehicle and trailer parts:
- Body components
- Brakes
- Coupling devices & towing connections
- Exhaust system
- Frame
- Fuel system
- Headlight aiming
- Horn
- Lighting equipment
- Mirrors
- Odometer & speedometer function
- Steering system
- Suspension system
- Tires & wheels
- Windshield & other glazing
- Windshield washer & wipers
Motor Vehicles
- Body components
- Brakes
- Coupling devices & towing connections
- Frame
- Glass (if so equipped)
- Lighting equipment
- Suspension system
- Tires & wheels
- Mud flaps or fenders
- Cargo body
- Load securement devices
- Under–ride protection devices
Trailers
Following the inspection, the tester will affix an approval sticker to all vehicles and trailers meeting the criteria set out in the Official Inspection Station Manual. This sticker, issued for the month in which the vehicle was inspected, will be valid until the end of that month in the next year.
Vehicles and trailers not passing the inspection will receive a rejection sticker and must be reinspected within 10 days.
Recordkeeping
A copy of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Report (MVIR), completed by an authorized mechanic at the time of inspection, must be kept in the vehicle to which it applies and made available upon request to a peace officer or inspector.
