Application
The following commercial vehicles must pass a compulsory inspection by a designated inspection facility prior to being operated:
- Taxis;
- Buses, including school buses;
- Commercial vehicles having a licensed gross vehicle weight of more than 8,200 kilograms;
- Vehicles, other than motorcycles, the operator of which is required to hold a licence under the Motor Carrier Act or a licence or temporary operating permit under the Passenger Transportation Act;
- Vehicles, other than motorcycles, owned or leased by a driver training school; and
- Trailers and semitrailers as defined as follows:
- “Trailer” includes a vehicle without motive power designed to be drawn by or used in conjunction with a motor vehicle and constructed so that no appreciable part of its weight rests on or is carried by the motor vehicle, but does not include:
- A trailer having a gross vehicle weight of less than 1,401 kilograms that is licensed under the Motor Vehicle Act;
- A trailer that is designed, constructed and equipped for human habitation, or designed, constructed and equipped for human occupancy for industrial, professional, or commercial purposes; or
- A boat, horse, snowmobile, automobile, or motorcycle trailer that is not used for business purposes or financial gain;
- “Semitrailer” includes a vehicle without motive power designed to be drawn by a motor vehicle or truck tractor and so constructed that part of its weight and that of its load rests on and is carried by the motor vehicle or truck tractor, and a pole trailer, but does not include a vehicle having a gross vehicle weight of less than 1,401 kilograms that is licensed under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Procedure
The inspection facility will issue a copy of the inspection report and an inspection certificate (in the form of a decal) to all vehicles passing the inspection. The report must be carried in the vehicle at all times, and the decal must be affixed as follows:
- In the case of a motor vehicle, to the outside lower left-hand or lower right-hand corner of the windshield or the outside of the fixed glazed surface to the right of the operator; and
- In the case of a trailer, on the outside of the left or right lower front corner of the trailer.
Inspection certificates expire on the last day of the sixth month following the issuance of the certificate. An inspection certficate expires on the last day of the 12th month following the issuance of the certificate for the following vehicles:
- A bus licensed and insured as a farm vehicle;
- A farm vehicle having a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 17,300 kilograms;
- A commercial trailer, except a commercial trailer used with a logging truck or equipped with a dump box;
- An emergency vehicle;
- An industrial machine or a road building machine having a compressor, conveyor, crane, derrick, drill, drill rig, seismograph, or pumper body style;
- A vehicle owned or leased by a driver training school; or
- A commercial vehicle other than a bus, taxi, or logging truck having a licensed gross vehicle weight of more than 8,200 kilograms, but equal to or less than 17,300 kilograms.
