Rhode Island is not a state-plan state and therefore follows federal OSHA in most cases regarding worker safety. However, Rhode Island state law requires workers and supervisors who work on municipal and state construction projects with a total project cost of $10,000 or more to complete a 10-hour OSHA construction safety training course.
- Workers must carry their course completion card on their person at all times while work is being performed.
- Any employee who is required to complete the 10-hour program but has not done so will be subject to removal from the work site, if the employee does not provide documentation of having completed such program within 15 days after the date the employee is found to be in noncompliance.
- The state may assess a civil penalty to employers of up to $2,500 in addition to a penalty of $100 per employee for each day of noncompliance.
