Yukon-based vehicles
Effective December 13, 2007, Yukon repealed the Motor Transport Act. The Act had required bus/motorcoach operators and motor carriers to obtain operating authority before operating in the territory. Bus/Motorcoach operators and motor carriers will now only be regulated on the basis of safety fitness.
To implement the safety fitness requirements, Yukon adopted the National Safety Code (NSC) Regulation, effective May 1, 2008, under the Motor Vehicles Act. The regulation requires Yukon-based carriers operating the following commercial vehicles to obtain an NSC number before operating within the territory:
- Commercial vehicles with a registered gross vehicle weight greater than 4,500 kilograms; or
- A bus carrying more than 10 people, including the driver.
To obtain the National Safety Code number, contact the Yukon National Safety Code Office at (867) 667-5782.
The fee for an initial NSC number is $50. The number does not expire (unless it is revoked).
U.S. carriers
U.S.-based carriers traveling through Yukon are not required to obtain an NSC number, as Yukon will accept the carrier’s U.S. DOT number.
U.S.-based carriers wishing to do business within Yukon must obtain an NSC number from the Yukon National Safety Code Office.
To obtain the National Safety Code number, contact the Yukon National Safety Code Office at (867) 667-5782.
Insurance
Carriers must hold the following minimum liability insurance coverage to cover bodily injury to or death of any person or loss of or damage to property of other persons, other than cargo:
- $1,000,000 for each motor vehicle; and
- $2,000,000 for each motor vehicle used to transport dangerous goods.
