With the elimination of economic regulation of public service
vehicles on January 1, 1995, the Northwest Territories eliminated
the Highway Transport Board and only regulates on the basis of
safety fitness.
Carriers apply to the Northwest Territories Department of
Transportation for a National Safety Code certificate (also
referred to as a safety fitness certificate).
Along with a complete application, carriers must provide proof
of insurance coverage (minimum $200,000 liability; $5,000,000 if
the carrier is required to have an Emergency Response Plan), list
of company officers/directors/shareholders, detailed equipment
listing, and a list of employees that have completed dangerous
goods training (if applicable).
