FAQ
No, but safety shoes that meet the ASTM F-2412 and F-2413 requirements (ANSI Z41 has been discontinued) per 1910.136(b) will be marked inside the shoe with a stamp or label. Shoe manufacturers now must meet these two ASTM standards instead of the ANSI standard. The most recent editions of ASTM F-2412 and F-2413 were issued in 2011. OSHA says in a February 10, 2011, compliance directive, CPL 02-01-050, “Enforcement Guidance for Personal Protective Equipment in General Industry” that a citation shall not be issued for a violation of the applicable PPE standard if the employer demonstrates that a piece of equipment is as effective as that complying with the incorporated ASTM or ANSI standard. Protective footwear that is constructed in accordance with one of these consensus standards will be deemed to be in compliance with the requirements of 1910.136(b)(2). In these cases, the footwear would not be marked.
