The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.
Effective July 1, 2024, the minimum and living wage for the District of Columbia is $17.50 per hour, $10.00 for tipped employees. Tipped employee totals must equal the minimum wage.
Effective July 1, 2023, the minimum and living wage for the District of Columbia is $17.00 per hour, $8.00 for tipped employees. Tipped employee total wages must equal the minimum wage.
The minimum wage increases annually based on the Consumer Price Index, or will be $1 higher than the federal rate, whichever is greater.
Effective March 1, 2024, employers must pay minimum wage rates when a DC employee performs at least two hours of work for the same employer in the District in one work week.
