An applicant for a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 licence must undergo a medical examination at the time of application and file with Registrar a medical report completed by a qualified physician. Periodic medical examinations are also required every five years until the age of 45 and every three years thereafter. At age 65, an exam is required annually thereafter.
On the basis of the medical report, the Registrar will determine whether or not a certain class licence may be issued or if it may be issued with restrictions. To aid in this determination, the following minimum standards have been set:
- Vision Standard:
- Class 1–4 (emergency) and class 6 — 20/30 best eye; 20/100 worst.
- Class 4 (taxi), 5 (commercial) — 20/40 best eye; 20/200 worst.
- Class 5 (personal) — 20/50
- Peripheral:
- Class 5 — 120 degrees on horizontal meridian and 15 continuous degrees above and below fixation, both eyes open and examined together.
- Class 4 (taxi) and Class 5 (commercial) — 120 degrees on horizontal meridian and 15 continuous degrees above and below fixation, both eyes open and examined together.
- Class 1, 2, 3, 4 (emergency), and 5 — 150 degrees on horizontal meridian and 20 continuous degrees above and below fixation, both eyes open and examined together.
- The ability to recognize the colours red and green. (Class 1, 2, 3, and 4.)
- No evidence of any mental, emotional, nervous or physical disorder which may interfere with the safe operation of a motor vehicle.
- No drug or alcohol addictions.
Specific physical conditions which may prevent an applicant from obtaining a licence are listed in the regulations for each licence class.
