Detecting health problems which may constitute a danger for highway safety is done by varying means and on the following occasions:
- Declaration
- The first licence application;
- Driver’s licence renewal;
- Statutory controls based on a driver’s age and the class of licence.
Class 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4B or 4C licence —- Upon licence renewal when the holder reaches age 45, 55, 60 and 65.
- Every two years thereafter.
- In accordance with the 1998 Reciprocity agreement with the U.S. (condition W): Every 5 years up to age 45, every 3 years between 46 and 65 and annually thereafter.
All Classes —- Upon licence renewal when the holder reaches age 75 and 80
- Every two years thereafter
- Persons whose physical condition require periodic examination (six months, one - three - five years).
Conviction under the Criminal Code of a person found guilty of a first time alcohol or drug related offence —- The person must have an assessment establishing, to the satisfaction of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), that the person’s relationship with alcohol or drug consumption does not interfere with the safe operation of a road vehicle of the class applied for.
Six months prior to the expiration date of the medical examination, a driver will receive an updated form that must be completed by a healthcare professional and returned to the SAAQ within 90 days. On the basis of this report, the SAAQ will determine whether a certain class licence may be issued or if it may be issued with restrictions.
If the 90 day period expires, the SAAQ may suspend the driver’s licence until the form is received.
