FAQ

Many applicants have valid commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs); are they still required to complete a road test?

The CDL may be accepted in lieu of a road test. The CDL road test should have been administered in a similar vehicle to which the driver will be assigned if hired.

If a driver is intended to be assigned a vehicle that requires that driver to have a doubles/triples or tank endorsement, the road test must be administered.

If the driver’s CDL is accepted in lieu of the road test, a copy of the driver’s CDL must be kept in the driver’s qualification (DQ) file.

This exception is located in Section 391.33 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
