Transportation of Hazardous Materials
The PSC of West Virginia, Transportation Division, is responsible for enforcing regulations regarding the transportation and handling of hazardous materials. The Commission also issues permits and registrations relevant to the transportation of these materials.
West Virginia is one of four sates participating in the Uniform State Hazardous Materials. Through this program, West Virginia uses the same uniform procedures and application forms for hazardous materials transportation registration and permits as Michigan, Nevada, and Oklahoma. Carriers need to contact their base state to register and apply for the permit, which will then — after a carrier has registered and paid its fees — be honored by each state that participates in the Uniform Program.

Transportation of Hazardous Waste
Transporters of hazardous waste or low-level radioactive waste must complete the registration and permitting application thought the Uniform State hazardous Materials Registration and Permitting Program.
For more information regarding the Uniform Program, visit https://hazmatalliance.org.
Transporters of hazardous waste must also notify the West Virginia DEP, Division of Water and Waste Management, of transportation activities prior to transportation. Transportation activities includes the location and general description of the activities, and which regulated wastes are handled.
