Transportation of Hazardous Materials
No permit is required to transport hazardous materials within the state.
Transportation of Hazardous Waste
Transporters of hazardous waste are required to submit a notification form acknowledging their hazardous waste transportation activity and can’t transport hazardous waste without a valid United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identification number.

Radioactive Materials
Certain shippers of radioactive materials — such as nuclear waste and spent fuel — are required to notify the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (DEM) prior to transportation.
