Transportation of Radioactive Materials
Permits are required to transport radioactive materials into or throughout Connecticut. Permits may be obtained from the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT). The following requirements are to be considered a condition of the permit:
- All routes will be determined by the Connecticut DOT;
- All shipments are to be made during daylight hours between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.;
- The permit is void on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays;
- The permit or a confirmation of it must be in the possession of the operator of the vehicle while transporting the radioactive material over state highways;
- The provisions of Title 49 of the CFR concerning the transport of hazardous material shall be deemed as part of the conditions of this permit; and
- A fee of $25.00 shall be paid in advance for each single trip permit.
Transportation of Hazardous Waste
The transportation of hazardous waste — as well as waste not recognized by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) — is subject to special requirements within Connecticut. Any carrier transporting hazardous waste within or throughout Connecticut must have a permit from DEEP (except a generator transporting 1,000 kilograms or less of their own waste to a permitted facility).
