OSHA does provide some guidance in 29 CFR 1910.36(d) and (e). More information is available in NFPA’s Life Safety Code. OSHA does not incorporate the requirements of NFPA’s Life Safety Code, however, if you comply with the Safety Code, OSHA considers you to be in compliance with their requirements, according to 29 CFR 1910.35.
