A voluntary national consensus standard, ANSI Z490.1-2016, Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health, and Environmental Training was approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in July 2001. In December 2024, a revised version, ANSI/ASSP Z490.1-2024, was released.
Development of the standard began in 1998. The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is the official secretariat of ANSI Z490.
The standard establishes a baseline for employers to follow in any training situation. The standard covers training development, delivery, evaluation, and management of training and training programs. Since it is performance-oriented rather than prescriptive, it allows for flexibility, yet it has auditable and measurable requirements.

ANSI Z490 has not been incorporated by reference in any OSHA standard.
