FAQ
Is it legal for a multi-state employer to send a standard form to previous employers for references that include a Social Security number (SSN), or do privacy policies need to be taken into consideration?
Generally, there is no federal law against an employer collecting job applicants’ SSNs. Many states, however, have laws on how the information must be handled. Given that the multi-state employer is working with individuals from all over the country, it might be easier to cross out that line on the form.
