Virginia’s idling limits apply to motor vehicles licensed for commercial or public service.

Exception: There is an exception to the idling rules for an engine that provides auxiliary power (other than heat or air conditioning).

Maximum idle time

Up to three mins. in commercial or residential urban areas
Diesel powered vehicles may idle for up to 10 mins. to minimize restart problems.
