OSHA’s standard that requires eyewash stations 29 CFR 1910.151(C) does not specify how often emergency eyewash stations and showers have to be tested. However, OSHA has referenced the consensus standard ANSI Z358.1 when citing the General Duty Clause.
In short, the ANSI standard requires that you:
- Have tempered water in the units,
- Run the plumbed units weekly,
- Visually inspect the self contained units to verify they are in good condition and change the water as required, and
- Annually inspect the units.
Running units for at least three minutes is suggested to reduce microbial contamination and any sediment build up in the lines.
