Specific ladder safety system requirements are outlined in 1910.29(i). In general, the ladder safety system must be designed in such a way that it does not require a worker to continuously hold, push, or pull any part of the system. This allows the worker to move up and down the fixed ladder with both hands free for climbing. OSHA says this also allows a worker to perform a task when they stop climbing.
