Though they share some symptoms, De Quervain’s disease and carpel tunnel differ significantly. De Quervain’s disease affects the tendons near the base of thumb near the wrist, whereas carpal tunnel affects the median nerve that runs through the wrist. Both can make it painful to turn the wrist, make a fist, or grasp objects.
