A good way to encourage trainees to think about the material being presented is to question them on it. But there is an art to questioning in the training setting in order to make the greatest impact. Here are a few tips.
Before training begins, question participants on:
- New material to motivate them to focus on it.
- Specific information that will be covered during the training session. This will help them to look for it during the session.
During training, question participants on:
- Their knowledge of facts.
- Their comprehension of concepts.
- Their ability to apply concepts.
Help them to:
- Relate old information to new.
- Analyze what they are learning.
- Evaluate and analyze facts and circumstances.
After training, ask participants to:
- Recap what they have learned.
- Relate current information to upcoming information, and a global context.
By encouraging trainees to process new information as they are learning it, you enable them to better transfer this information once they’re back on the job.
