Hazardous waste cleanup programs - New Jersey
New Jersey (EPA Region 2) isn’t authorized to implement its own Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program. While the state does have authorization for the RCRA “base” program (such as Subtitle C) and has its own hazardous waste laws and regulations, EPA still oversees more advanced waste remediation programs.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) administers hazardous waste regulations in the state; issues permits for treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs); oversees inspections, enforcement, and transporter audits; manages hazardous waste manifests and medical waste tracking; oversees state cleanups/remediations under state law (at non-RCRA sites); and more. The state’s Site Remediation Reform Act created the Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) program, essentially shifting oversight from NJDEP to certified professionals.
