Massachusetts (EPA Region 1) is fully authorized to implement its own Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) operates its own cleanup program under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP). The commonwealth’s standards may be more stringent than federal guidelines. MassDEP may issue penalties, require remediation, and pursue legal action against parties responsible for hazardous waste incidents.
