Hazardous waste cleanup programs - Maryland
Maryland (EPA Region 3) isn’t authorized to implement its own Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). EPA Region 3 EPA is the primary authority for cleanup programs in Maryland. However, the state does have regulatory oversight of other aspects of hazardous waste management through the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Land Management Administration. This agency is responsible for:
- Regulatory development and interpretation;
- Permitting of treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs);
- Managing tracking and certification programs;
- Certifying transporters of hazardous waste; and
- Monitoring compliance with hazardous waste regulations.
The MDE also coordinates with EPA and local governments to manage hazardous waste cleanups in the state.
