Intrastate
Intrastate for-hire carriers must secure operating authority from the Department of Transportation and pay a one-time filing fee of $500. The state issues an LC number on the registration card. A $5 per unit fee is also required. The per unit fee is renewable annually by December 31. Use Form MV2843, Wisconsin Motor Carrier Authority Application to apply. Commercial vehicles of any weight are subject to authority requirements.
Out-of-state corporations operating intrastate in Wisconsin are required to file with the Department of Financial Institutions as a foreign corporation.
Insurance: Intrastate, $750,000 CSL if over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight; $300,000 CSL if 10,000 pounds or less gross vehicle weight. A Form E Certificate of Insurance must also be filed. (Hazardous Materials $1,000,000; hazardous substances $5,000,000.)

Wisconsin is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.
