Intrastate
For-hire carriers of property and household goods operating intrastate must obtain a certificate of operating authority. Applications are made to the Motor Carriers Section of the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers with a filing fee of $250 plus a per-unit fee of $20. Proof of insurance filing is required, filing fee $10. Commercial vehicles of any weight are subject to authority requirements.
Insurance: Operating intrastate must have $250,000/500,000 PL and $25,000 PD (plus insurance filing fee of $10) Cargo insurance of $25,000 required for intrastate carriers. Intrastate carriers must file Form E and Form H.
Interstate
Rhode Island is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.
