Intrastate
The motor carrier industry in New Jersey is generally unregulated. However, operating authority approval by the state is required to transport the following:
- Alcoholic beverage transportation:
- Alcoholic Beverage Control Board - (609) 984-2830 or (609) 984-2736
- Liquified petroleum gas:
- Motor Vehicle Services, Motor Carrier Unit - (609) 633-9408
- Hazardous waste transportation and solid waste transportation:
- Department of Environmental Protection – (609) 292-7081
- Household goods transportation:

Insurance: Each vehicle registered in New Jersey and engaged in intrastate operations must provide proof of insurance coverage in the following minimum amounts: $15,000/$30,000 PL and $5,000 PD. Interstate $750,000 CSL.
Interstate
New Jersey is not a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA); however, interstate for-hire carriers based in this state are required to select a base state according to UCR guidelines and file UCR registration. UCR registration is required even if travel occurs only in non-UCR participating states.
