Intrastate
Intrastate common carriers of property with commercial vehicles of any weight must apply for a for-hire certificate and pay an annual fee of $25. All for-hire carriers must also obtain a Kentucky receipt, renewed annually by December 31, at a fee of $10 per unit. Credentials issued are not vehicle specific.
Household goods and passenger carriers must contact the Office of Legal Services, Hearings Section for authority applications. Renewals are handled by the Department of Vehicle Regulation.
Insurance: (non-hazardous/radioactive) vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 18,000 pounds must have $100,000/600,000 PL and $50,000 PD.
Vehicles with a gross weight less than 18,000 pounds must have $100,000/300,000 PL and $50,000 PD.
Household goods carriers must have $5,000/10,000 cargo insurance.
Vehicles used for the transportation of hazardous materials (except petroleum products in bulk in amounts less than 10,000 pounds) must have on each vehicle single limit liability insurance coverage of at least $1,000,000.
A Form E Certificate of Insurance or Form No. TC 95-2 11, “Uniform Motor Carrier Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Certificate of Insurance,” must be filed by all for-hire intrastate carriers; Form H required also for household goods.
Interstate
Kentucky is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.
