Intrastate
Passenger and household goods carriers: Intrastate common and contract carriers of passengers and household goods, regardless of weight, must make application for registration and identification of vehicles operated under authority issued by the Indiana Department of Revenue. Application fees are as follows:
Temporary | $100 valid for 180 days |
Permanent | $100 + $80 publication fee |
Emergency Temporary | $100 valid for 30 days |
A fee of $10 per unit is required. A registration receipt to photocopy for each vehicle is issued.
Interstate household goods carriers and passenger carriers who also operate intrastate in Indiana require authority.
Property carriers: Intrastate Indiana-based for-hire carriers weighing 10,001 or more pounds must file an Indiana Business Authorization and Safety Application (BAS-1), pay a $10 per vehicle fee, and file evidence of insurance on Form E. Annual renewal is required. Interstate carrier operating intrastate in Indiana do not require authority.
Farm vehicles bearing a valid farm license plate are exempt from obtaining the Indiana USDOT number when operating solely within Indiana. However, if a qualifying vehicle crosses the state line, a USDOT number is required.
Interstate general commodity carriers also operating intrastate in Indiana do not require authority from the state.
Insurance: Indiana has adopted the federal standards. Depending upon the commodities to be transported intrastate, common and/or contract carriers must maintain insurance in the amounts of $750,000, ($300,000 if operating only vehicles transporting non-hazardous materials with gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less), $1,000,000 or $5,000,000 CSL. Contract carriers that transport railroad employees, at least $5,000,000. A Form E certificate of Insurance must be filed as proof of insurance.
Interstate
Indiana is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.
