Intrastate
Intrastate carriers who propose to limit their intrastate operations to commodities and services which are exempt, or who propose to own vehicles for the purposes of leasing same, must apply in writing and obtain a certificate of exemption from the Division of Motor Vehicles. The filing fee is $25. A certificate of exemption constitutes approval of the purchase of for-hire tags for vehicles owned and registered in the name of the party to whom the certificate is issued. Must have name, address, exemption number three inches high on each side of vehicle.
Insurance: Intrastate: Less than 26,000 lb GVW, $100,000/300,000/50,000; More than 26,000 lb GVW, $750,000 CSL. Cargo insurance, $35,000/50,000. Form E and H required.
Interstate
North Carolina is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.
