Intrastate

Intrastate common and contract carriers of passengers and household goods must goods must make application for registration and identification of vehicles operated under authority issued by the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Intrastate for hire carriers weighing 10,001 or more pounds must file an Indiana Business Authorization and Safety Application (BAS-1), pay a $10 per vehicle fee, and file evidence of insurance on Form E. Annual renewal is required.

All Indiana intrastate motor carriers weighing over 10,001 pounds are required to obtain and display an “Indiana” US DOT number.

Farm vehicles bearing a valid farm license plate are exempt from obtaining the Indiana USDOT number when operating solely within Indiana. However, if the vehicle crosses the state line, a USDOT number is required.

Insurance: Indiana has adopted the Federal Standards. Depending upon the commodities to be transported intrastate, common and/or contract carriers must maintain insurance in the amounts of $750,000, ($300,000 if operating only vehicles transporting non-hazardous materials with gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less), $1,000,000 or $5,000,000 CSL. A Form E certificate of Insurance must be filed as proof of insurance.

Interstate

Indiana is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.
