Intrastate
Motor carriers operating commercial motor vehicles intrastate must apply for a Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier (GIMC) registration for a fee of $50 from the Department of Public Safety. A commercial motor vehicle is one that is used in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise that:
- Has a gross weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or greater; or
- Is designed or used to transport more than 10 passengers, including the driver; or
- Is used to transport hazardous materials in a quantity that requires a placard.
An original Form E insurance filing must be furnished, as well as a $5 per vehicle fee.
Applicants must submit a completed, signed, and notarized Georgia Security and Immigration Act (GSICA) Affidavit, and copy of the front and back of a “Secure and Verifiable Document” (verifiable for identification purposes). The applicant must also complete a safety educational seminar within the 12 months preceding the application and submit evidence confirming completion.
Intrastate also operating interstate
Interstate private carriers also operating intrastate and registered with the UCR are not required to obtain the GMIC in Georgia. Carriers based in Georgia with interstate and intrastate vehicles are not required to obtain the GMIC for their intrastate-only vehicles.

Georgia is a participating member of the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement (UCRA). Online registration and fee payment is recommended and available to all carriers at the national UCRA website at www.ucr.in.gov.

Insurance: Operating intrastate $100,000/300,000 PL and $50,000 PD required. $5,000/10,000 cargo. A form E Certificate of Insurance must also be filed.
