Single licence concept

Application

This standard, which permits a driver to hold only one licence, has been implemented to ensure that driving violations are assigned to a single licence and that no opportunity exists to use multiple licenses to avoid prosecution and suspension.

Procedure

Upon application, a driver must surrender any out-of-jurisdiction licences to the Registrar. The licence(s) will then be returned to the issuing province or state, and the driver’s record will be updated accordingly. An interprovincial record exchange will permit the Registrar to determine the licensing status of the applicant.

Classified licence system

The table below outlines the vehicles which may be driven by a holder in each class. An applicant for a school bus licence must have held a license for at least five years preceding application.

No person shall operate on a highway a vehicle that is equipped with airbrakes, and that requires a class 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 driver’s licence to operate, unless the person holds a valid driver’s licence that is endorsed with the letter “A” by the Registrar of the class required for the vehicle.

Knowledge & performance tests

Application

Every applicant must demonstrate his understanding of applicable highway signs, his knowledge of provincial traffic laws, and his competency to operate a motor vehicle through a combination of knowledge and performance tests. Road tests must be taken in a vehicle that matches the licence class for which application has been made.

Class 3 road tests must be taken in a vehicle with tandem axles.

Class 4 road tests must be taken in a bus or van with a seating capacity of less than 25 passengers, but more than 7 or a full size cargo van.
