South Dakota has adopted Part 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as amended through January 1, 2025, with some modifications.

Part 391 applies to drivers and motor carriers operating intrastate vehicles and combinations of vehicles with three or more axles or with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, and any size or type of vehicle used to transport hazardous materials requiring placarding.

Driving RecordsA “Request to Obtain South Dakota Abstract" form must be completed and notarized.
The form is available via the Department of Public Safety website:

The fee is $5.00 per request
Physical Exam - Motor CarrierIntrastate drivers are exempt from the physical requirements of 391.41
