Vermont has a state-specific interim Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 20 parts per trillion (ppt) for the sum of five PFAS: PFOA, PFOS, PFHpA, PFHxS, and PFNA.
If PFAS exceed the MCL, water systems are required to give public notice and develop short- and a long-term plans to address PFAS contamination.
Vermont must adopt MCLs at least as stringent as the federal MCLs.
- PFOA: 4 parts per trillion (ppt)
- PFOS: 4 ppt
Vermont House Bill 286, introduced February 20, 2025, was referred to the Committee on Environment. It would set MCLs for PFOA and PFOS at 0 ppt and 20 ppt for any other testable PFAS not specifically listed.
