South Carolina follows the federal Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). 

  • PFOA: 4 parts per trillion (ppt) 
  • PFOS: 4 ppt 

There are no state-specific PFAS drinking water requirements. South Carolina requires public water systems to meet the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and State Primary Drinking Water Regulations. While the state may authorize variances from the regulations, the variances must be at least as stringent as federal standards.

South Carolina is committed to monitoring and complying with the federal standards. The Bureau of Water is sampling and analyzing all public water systems that serve more than 10,000 persons and some small systems selected by EPA for the designated 29 PFAS analytes (and lithium).
