Kansas is not currently following federal standards and has no state-specific PFAS drinking water requirements. The Department of Health and Environment adopts by reference the federal maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) as in effect on July 1, 2015; however, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized MCLs for PFOA and PFOS in 2024.
According to Bureau of Water Public Water Supply Section PFAS Monitoring Plan — Phase 1: Prioritization for Sampling of Public Water Supply Systems, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), however, supports the U.S. EPA’s PFAS initiatives, pledges to work with the EPA, and stresses the importance of a consistent nationwide approach.
Kansas actively monitors PFAS levels in drinking water and is working on a public water supply monitoring program.
