Illinois follows the federal Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs).
- PFOA: 4 parts per trillion (ppt)
- PFOS: 4 ppt
The Illinois Safe Public Drinking Water Act requires that within one year of the Environmental Protection Agency promulgating MCLs for any PFAS, the Illinois Pollution Control Board must adopt identical rules.
Notably, the Illinois Pollution Control Board added six PFAS, including PFOA and PFOS, to the groundwater quality standards for Class I potable resource groundwater and Class II general resource groundwater.
