Hawaii follows the federal Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs).
- PFOA: 4 ppt (parts per trillion)
- PFOS: 4 ppt
However, state-specific guidance sets non-enforceable standards that are stricter than federal standards. Hawaii has published Environmental Action Levels (EALs) for more than 20 PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS. When an EAL is exceeded, it warrants further evaluation. The state has established drinking water EALs for both PFAS.
- See the HIDOH Interim PFAS Guidance for the state’s EALs
