Virginia has adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), in effect as of October 1, 2025.*
Section 390.21 applies to vehicles over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, whichever is greater, and vehicles of any size used to transport materials in a quantity requiring placarding.
*Virginia has adopted the USDOT marking regulations in 390.21 for intrastate CMVs. However, the state is not currently enforcing this regulation. Check with the state regarding any changes in this enforcement policy.
Additional Requirement | A for-hire motor vehicle with a registered gross weight ≥ 10,000 lbs. must display the legal name or trade name of the motor carrier on both sides of the vehicle. |
