Montana has adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), as updated through March 26, 2025.
Section 390.21 applies to an intrastate vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 26,001 pounds or more, or a vehicle of any size transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
The US DOT number must have the suffix “MT” if the carrier is an intrastate only carrier.
Example: USDOT 123456 MT
Additional Requirements | Household goods, passenger (regular route), and garbage/waste transporters: Intrastate vehicles subject to authority regulation by the Montana Public Service Commission having a gross weight > 10,000 lbs., must display on both sides of each vehicle or combination the name or trade name and city and state of, or public service commission or department of transportation number of, the person or corporation under whose jurisdiction the vehicle is being operated. The information must be in letters in sharp contrast to the background. The size, shape, and color must allow it to be readily legible in daylight from a distance of 50 ft. while the vehicle is not in motion, and be maintained to remain legible. The information may be painted on the vehicle; a decal or removable device may also be used. |
