DOT marking identification - Kentucky
Kentucky has adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).
Section 390.21 applies to for-hire and private vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or transporting hazardous materials which require placarding
The US DOT number must have the suffix “KY” if the carrier is an intrastate only carrier. Example: USDOT 123456 KY
Exception: Section 390.21 does not include farm to market agricultural transportation motor vehicles with a GVWR ≤ 26,000 lbs.
“Farm-to-market agricultural transportation” means the operation of a motor vehicle that is controlled and operated by a farmer who, as a private motor carrier, is using a vehicle:
- To transport agricultural products from his or her farm;
- To transport farm machinery or farm supplies to his or her farm; or
- Generally thought of as farm machinery; and
- Which is not transporting hazardous materials of a type or quantity that requires the vehicle to be marked or placarded in accordance with 601 KAR 1:025.
| Additional Requirement | Motor Vehicles operating interstate or intrastate in Kentucky with a combined license weight > 59,999 lbs. must obtain a KYU license (in addition to the IFTA or fuel tax license). The display of the KYU number is optional if the company has a US DOT number. Note: The KYU number must be displayed, in addition to the DOT number, if the vehicle is leased and the lessor holds the KYU account and pays the KYU taxes. In this case, KYU number must be displayed. A copy of the lease agreement clearly defining who is paying for the KYU credential should be kept in the vehicle to avoid confusion. |
