DOT marking identification - Indiana
Indiana has adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).
Section 390.21 applies to for-hire carriers operating motor vehicles exclusively in intrastate commerce that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more.
Section 390.21 applies to private carriers operating motor vehicles exclusively in intrastate commerce that have a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.
Section 390.21 applies to any size vehicle (for-hire or private) transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
Exception: Farm vehicles bearing valid farm license plates are exempt from obtaining the Indiana US DOT number when operating solely within Indiana. However, if the vehicle crosses the state line, a US DOT number is required.
The US DOT number must have the suffix “IN” if the carrier is an intrastate only carrier.
Example: USDOT 123456 IN
