Georgia has adopted 390.21 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), with subsequent amendments.
Section 390.21 applies to any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used on a highway in intrastate and interstate commerce when the vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more, or is of any size transporting a placardable amount of hazardous materials.
The US DOT number must have the suffix “GA” if the carrier is an intrastate only carrier.
Example: USDOT 123456 GA
Lightweight commercial motor vehicles, as defined in OCGA 40-1-1 (other than limousine or limousine carrier vehicle) must be marked and identified with the:
- Name of the motor carrier;
- City and state of principal domicile; and
- Company telephone number.
The markings must meet the display requirements in 390.21.
A lightweight commercial motor vehicle is defined in OCGA 40-1-1 as a motor vehicle which does not meet the definition of a commercial motor vehicle and which, in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise is used to transport hazardous materials in a type or quantity for which placards are not required, is used to transport property or passengers (not taxicab) for compensation, or is a wrecker or tow truck.
